Background

Raj Mukherji is a Democratic member of the New Jersey Senate representing the 32nd Legislative District, which encompasses the Hudson County municipalities of Hoboken and portions of Jersey City. Jersey City is the district's most populous municipality with an estimated 2024 population exceeding 300,000, while Hoboken's population stands near 59,000. Mukherji assumed office on January 9, 2024, following his election the previous November.

A lawyer, entrepreneur, and former U.S. Marine, Mukherji built a career spanning technology, healthcare, real estate, and public service. He founded an internet consulting and software development company while in middle school, later selling the business to enlist in the U.S. Marine Corps Reserve two weeks after the September 11 attacks at age 17. He served in military intelligence and was honorably discharged as a sergeant. Mukherji earned a bachelor's degree from Thomas Edison State University, a Master of Public Policy from Princeton University, a Master of Liberal Arts from the University of Pennsylvania, and a J.D. from Seton Hall University School of Law.

His local government service began in Jersey City, where at age 24 he was appointed commissioner and chairman of the Jersey City Housing Authority, the state's second-largest public housing authority. He held that volunteer post for more than 15 years until 2024. He also served as deputy mayor of Jersey City from 2012 to 2013. In 2013, at age 28, Mukherji won a six-way Democratic primary for the New Jersey General Assembly by a 36-point margin. He went on to serve five terms in the Assembly representing the 33rd District, including leadership stints as majority whip and deputy speaker, before winning election to the Senate.
