Background

Luanne M. Peterpaul is a Democratic member of the New Jersey General Assembly, representing the 11th Legislative District since January 9, 2024. The 11th Legislative District encompasses municipalities in Monmouth County, including Asbury Park, Colts Neck, Freehold, Long Branch, and Neptune. Born in Newark and a long-time resident of Monmouth County, she is the first out lesbian to serve in the New Jersey Legislature. Peterpaul earned a bachelor's degree from Duquesne University and a Juris Doctor from Seton Hall University School of Law. She is the managing partner of Peterpaul Law in Asbury Park, focusing on labor and employment law, general litigation, and training and education.

Prior to her legislative service, she served as an assistant Essex County prosecutor, successfully prosecuting cases ranging from theft to homicide, and subsequently served as Municipal Judge for the Cities of Long Branch and Asbury Park from 2018 to 2022. A prominent LGBTQ rights advocate, she served for 12 years as board chair of Garden State Equality, was instrumental in establishing same-sex marriage in New Jersey, and co-authored the New Jersey Anti-Bullying Bill of Rights signed into law by Governor Chris Christie in 2011 . She has served on the New Jersey Commission on Bullying and the New Jersey Anti-Bullying Task Force . Peterpaul resides in Long Branch with her wife Robin
