CAMDEN, N.J. — A Camden firefighter has died after being trapped beneath the ice in the Delaware River Thursday afternoon, authorities confirmed.
According to rescue crews on scene, the firefighter became submerged in the icy river near Wiggins Marina. Fire officials say the firefighter was under the water for approximately 30 minutes before being located and pulled from the river.
The firefighter was immediately transported to a local hospital, where he was later pronounced dead, Camden Fire Chief Jesse Flax said.
The circumstances that led to the firefighter entering the water remain unclear, and investigators are working to determine exactly what happened. There is no indication at this time that foul play was involved.
Emergency responders from multiple departments, including fire rescue and water rescue units, responded to the scene after reports of a person in the water. City officials have not yet released the identity of the fallen firefighter pending notification of next of kin.
The Camden community and officials expressed deep sorrow following the tragic loss, noting the firefighter’s dedication to public service and the risks faced daily by first responders.
More information is expected to be released as the investigation continues.
