TRENTON, N.J. — Just two weeks into Governor Mikie Sherrill’s term, she is facing sharp criticism from Republican lawmakers who argue her early focus on progressive policies and national media appearances is coming at the expense of New Jersey's most pressing issues.

Assemblyman Alex Sauickie (R-Ocean), a Republican Assemblyman of the 12th Legislative District, issued a statement on Monday accusing the new Democratic governor of prioritizing a "national political audition masquerading as leadership" over governing . Sauickie argues that Sherrill has "moved hard left out of the gate," leaving residents with the impression that their day-to-day concerns are secondary to building a national profile.

Sauickie's criticism centers on several specific early actions and events from the Sherrill administration:

  • Immigration Portal: Sauickie took issue with a proposed state-run online portal that would encourage residents to report interactions with federal immigration agents. He labeled the proposal "activist theater" that undermines law enforcement while failing to address the state's cost-of-living crisis.

  • 'The Daily Show' Appearance: The assemblyman also criticized Sherrill for taking what he called an "early victory lap" during a recent appearance on The Daily Show. He likened it to a premature "mission accomplished" moment .

  • Utility Relief Efforts: During her Daily Show interview, Sherrill mentioned signing executive orders to direct regulators to consider a temporary freeze on utility rate increases. Sauickie dismissed this as insufficient, noting that while the governor celebrates, "families did" get high gas bills during single-digit temperatures, and that freezing rates is not the same as lowering them .

A Call for Concrete Plans

Beyond the specific critiques, Sauickie argued that the administration has yet to outline serious proposals to tackle New Jersey's long-standing problems. He stated there is "still no serious proposal to actually lower bills, no real plan on property taxes, [and] no fix for a school funding formula that's pitting communities against each other" .

"We didn't come to Trenton to chase viral moments," Sauickie said. "We came here to deal with fixing the problems".
