NJ Transit Prepares to Restart Services Tuesday After Blizzard Shutdown

Following a historic winter blizzard that dropped widespread heavy snow across New Jersey and the broader Tri-State area, NJ Transit is set to resume bus, commuter rail, light rail, and paratransit service beginning Tuesday morning, Feb. 24, 2026, officials announced Monday.

Transit operations were suspended Sunday night through Monday as crews worked to clear heavy snow, ice, and debris from tracks, roads, and stations. Limited service on light rail lines began Monday afternoon, but full system resumption will take place Tuesday with modified schedules designed to balance safety with riders’ needs.

Phased Return to Service

Under the latest plan from NJ Transit:

  • Rail service (except for some commuter rail lines) will run on a Presidents’ Day holiday schedule rather than a full weekday timetable. This means reduced frequencies and some route adjustments as crews continue snow clearing and safety checks.

  • Lines such as the Morristown, Gladstone, and Montclair-Boonton will operate on the holiday schedule, with Midtown Direct service to New York’s Penn Station temporarily diverted to Hoboken with cross-honoring arrangements available on connecting services such as PATH and NY Waterway ferries.

  • The Atlantic City Rail Line will operate on its regular weekday schedule.

  • Some routes — including the North Jersey Coast Line and Raritan Valley Line — remain suspended pending further snow removal and safety inspections coordinated with Amtrak crews clearing switches on shared tracks.

Buses, Light Rail, and Access Link Ready to Run

NJ Transit says bus, light rail, and Access Link paratransit services will operate on regular weekday schedules beginning Tuesday morning. Riders are advised, however, to anticipate delays, detours, or occasional cancellations due to lingering roadway conditions and snow-clearing operations.

Safety First, Officials Say

State and transit officials emphasized safety as the priority in the phased resumption. Teams have been working around the clock to clear platforms, parking lots, terminals, and critical rail infrastructure following one of the largest snowstorms in decades.

Prior to the Tuesday resumption, NJ Transit restored limited service on its light rail network on Monday afternoon, including Newark Light Rail, River LINE, and Hudson-Bergen Light Rail on reduced schedules.

Rider Guidance

NJ Transit urged commuters to:

  • Check the NJ Transit website, mobile app, and social channels for the latest service alerts and schedule changes.

  • Sign up for customized alerts via the My Transit Alert system.

  • Allow extra travel time and be cautious when walking on snowy platforms or navigating affected stations.
