NJ Governor Sherrill Joins Three Multistate Alliances on Climate, Health, and Reproductive Care

NJ Governor Sherrill Joins Three Multistate Alliances on Climate, Health, and Reproductive Care

TRENTONGovernor Mikie Sherrill announced on Friday that New Jersey would join three major multi-state alliances: the U.S. Climate Alliance, the Governors Public Health Alliance, and the Reproductive Freedom Alliance. The executive commitment, signed March 27, indicated Sherrill’s intent to coordinate with other states within interstate coalitions opposed to Trump administration policies.

Move a Reaction to Federal “Chaos”

At the State House Thursday, Sherrill described the commitments as a response to federal actions threatening New Jersey families. "I'm proud to join a strong coalition of states across the country to tackle some of the most pressing challenges we face—protecting reproductive care, strengthening public health, and accelerating our clean energy transition," the governor said. "As Trump creates chaos in Washington, governors are on the front lines fighting back and getting results."

New Jersey joins states including California, New York, and Illinois in all three coalitions. The alliances facilitate cross-state data sharing, joint planning for health threats, and coordinated legal frameworks for reproductive care access.

The Governor's Office released details on Friday afternoon showing that New Jersey will participate in policy coordination, litigation strategy, and communications through the three nonpartisan coalitions. The alliances include 24 governors (Climate), 15 governors (Public Health), and 23 governors (Reproductive Freedom).

Alliance Heads Congratulate NJ on Entry

Alliance leaders immediately welcomed Sherrill's decision. U.S. Climate Alliance Executive Director Casey Katims said the governor "moved swiftly and decisively to cut harmful pollution and consumer costs" from her first day in office. Climate Alliance members commit to cutting greenhouse gas emissions 50–52% by 2030 and achieving net-zero no later than 2050.

Angela Botticella, who leads the Governors Public Health Alliance, said the participation reflects clear commitment to protecting public health during Sherrill's first 100 days. Christina Chang, Executive Director of the Reproductive Freedom Alliance, called New Jersey a stronghold for reproductive freedom.

The multistate commitments do not require legislative ratification, and take effect immediately through executive coordination between governors' offices.
