A West Deptford man has been charged with first-degree attempted murder following a violent stabbing that left a woman seriously injured, authorities confirmed.
Gloucester County Prosecutor Andrew B. Johns said the incident unfolded early Friday after a witness went to check on the woman and found a 61-year-old man outside her home holding a bloody knife, according to court records. Police identified the suspect as Randall D. Bilger of West Deptford Township.
The witness called 911 after the man, visibly covered in blood, answered a door and told them, “It’s not a good time,” prosecutors reported. When officers arrived, Bilger was still holding the knife and initially refused to comply with commands before law enforcement entered the residence and took him into custody.
Inside the home, investigators located the female victim suffering from multiple stab wounds to her shoulder and abdomen. She was transported by emergency responders to a local hospital for treatment. As of Saturday morning, officials had not released details on her condition.
An initial investigation indicated that the first stab wound to the woman’s shoulder occurred several hours before the witness arrived at the house, with a second wound to her abdomen occurring shortly before police were called.
Bilger now faces a first-degree attempted murder charge, which carries a potential prison sentence of up to 20 years if convicted. He also faces a third-degree unlawful possession of a weapon charge related to the incident.
The Gloucester County Prosecutor’s Major Crimes Unit and the West Deptford Police Department assisted in the investigation and arrest.
The case has shaken the normally quiet southwest New Jersey community and underscores ongoing concerns about violent crime and public safety in the region.
Officials said Bilger is scheduled for an initial court appearance on Saturday, where a judge will address bail and formal arraignment procedures.
